His 3.05 in 2001 was the lowest in the American League, for the Seattle club that won 116 games. He had come to Seattle two years earlier in the trade that sent Randy Johnson to Houston, and won 17 games as a rookie.
In October 2005 he pitched seven innings to win the fourth and last game of the World Series for the White Sox, whose four starters had completed every game of the Championship Series before it. Fifteen seasons gave him 156 wins against 108, a 4.15 earned run average, 2,264 innings and 1,621 strikeouts.
He was Venezuelan, signed at seventeen, and pitched for seven clubs after the shoulder went in 2007. The 2019 ballot gave him no votes at all.
