Eddie Fisher threw a knuckleball and threw it constantly. In 1965, working out of the Chicago White Sox bullpen, he appeared in 82 games — then an American League record — posted a 2.40 earned run average, made the All-Star team and was named the league's top reliever.
He pitched fifteen seasons and 690 games, only 63 of them starts, which made him one of the earliest pitchers to build an entire career in relief at a time when the role was still being invented. Baltimore acquired him in 1966 and he won a World Series ring there that autumn.
Born in Shreveport in 1936, Fisher finished 85-70 with 81 saves across seven clubs, and died on February 17, 2025.
