Dwight Gooden burst into the majors with the New York Mets in 1984 and spent eleven seasons there before moving through the Yankees, Cleveland, Houston and, in a single 2000 season, both the Yankees and Tampa Bay again, retiring that year.
He went 194-112 with a 3.51 earned run average, completing 68 of his 410 starts with 24 shutouts across 2,800 innings pitched. He struck out 2,293 batters, a career workload built up over sixteen major-league seasons.
The 1985 season brought the Cy Young Award and the Pitching Triple Crown together, one of the most dominant single seasons by a young pitcher in the sport's history. A Silver Slugger followed in 1992.
He made the All-Star team four times, in 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1988. Tampa, Florida is where he was born, on November 16, 1964; he threw and batted right-handed.
