Dwight Gooden's Rookie Strikeout Record

By September 12, 1984, nineteen-year-old New York Mets rookie Dwight Gooden had struck out 276 batters in 218 innings, breaking the Major League rookie strikeout record of 246, set by Cleveland's Herb Score in 1954.

Gooden, nicknamed "Doc" and later "Dr. K" for his strikeout dominance, won the National League Rookie of the Year award that season. The following year, at age 20, he won the NL Cy Young Award after leading the league in wins, ERA, and strikeouts, a pitching triple crown, becoming the youngest Cy Young winner in history at the time.

Gooden's early success made him one of the most electrifying young pitchers the sport had seen, though his career was later disrupted by substance abuse issues that limited what many considered a Hall of Fame trajectory.
