He struck out 245 men in 1955, more than anyone in the league and more than any rookie ever had, and won the Rookie of the Year award with 18 of the 24 votes. In 1956 he went 20-9 with a 2.53 earned run average and 263 strikeouts, again the most, and was twenty-three years old.

On May 7, 1957, Gil McDougald hit a line drive back through the box that struck him in the right eye. He did not pitch again that season. He came back in 1958 and tore a tendon in his elbow, and he never had the fastball again: 17 wins in five more seasons, and out of the game at twenty-nine.

Eight seasons gave him 55 wins against 46, a 3.36 earned run average, 858 innings, 837 strikeouts and 11 shutouts. He then called Cleveland games on radio and television for thirty-four years and became the voice people in Ohio knew him by. He died in 2008, at seventy-five.
