Atlanta traded him to Detroit in August 1987 for a twenty-year-old minor-league pitcher named John Smoltz. He went 9-0 with a 1.53 earned run average the rest of the way and the Tigers won the division by two games. Smoltz won 213 games for Atlanta over the next twenty years and was elected to the Hall of Fame.
Nineteen seasons and eight clubs gave him 194 wins against 174, a 3.76 earned run average, 3,367 innings and 98 complete games. He won 17 games for Toronto in 1984 and 17 again in 1985, and he was still winning 14 at thirty-eight.
He was traded or signed away seven times and had a reputation for being difficult with reporters and managers, which is part of why a career of that length produced one All-Star selection. The 1995 ballot gave him no votes at all.
