Doug Jones Marquee

b. June 24, 1957 · Milwaukee Brewers 1982, 1996–1998, Cleveland Indians 1986–1991, 1998, Houston Astros 1992–1993, Philadelphia Phillies 1994, Baltimore Orioles 1995, Chicago Cubs 1996, Oakland Athletics 1999–2000

He saved 303 games — 29th all-time — with a 3.30 earned run average over 1,128 innings, and was chosen for five All-Star teams. He got there on a changeup thrown in the low seventies behind a fastball barely faster, which is not how the position is usually staffed.

He was drafted in 1978 and did not hold a major-league job until 1988, at thirty. Between those dates are eight full seasons in the minor leagues and one appearance for Milwaukee in 1982. He saved 37 games in his first full year, then 32, then 43.

He pitched until he was forty-three and for seven clubs, saving 20 or more in a season for four of them. The writers gave him two votes of 520 in 2006. He died in November 2021 of Covid-19, at sixty-four.
