He went 22-6 with a 2.76 earned run average in 1990 and took the Cy Young Award with 118 points of 120. Pittsburgh won the division that year and the two after it, and he started the seventh game of the 1992 Championship Series and lost it 3-2 after leading into the ninth.
New York had traded him to Pittsburgh in November 1986 for Rick Rhoden and two others, which is among the better deals that organization has made and among the worse ones the Yankees have. Thirteen seasons gave him 155 wins against 134, a 3.73 earned run average, 2,535 innings and 21 shutouts.
Houston signed him for four years after 1992 and got a 3.79 earned run average and a losing record, which was the ballpark and the run support as much as him. His son Kyle pitched in the major leagues. The 2004 ballot gave him two votes of 506.
