Cincinnati got him from Oakland before the 1978 season and he worked 70 games, saved 28 and had a 1.97 earned run average. He was the closer for a club with Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan still on it, in the two years after the Big Red Machine stopped winning.
Fifteen seasons gave him 55 wins, 81 saves, 909 innings and a 3.63 earned run average across 584 appearances for seven clubs. He was a middle reliever for most of them: St. Louis used him in 1982 and won the World Series, Detroit used him in 1984 and won it too.
He came back to Pittsburgh at thirty-nine in 1989 and pitched a last season in 1990. He coached in the minor leagues for two decades after. No Hall of Fame ballot has listed him.
