Born January 4, 1930
Brooklyn, NY, USA
He reached the major leagues at twenty-seven, having spent seven years in the minor leagues and two in the Army, and pitched eighteen seasons in relief: 874 games, 153 saves, a 2.96 earned run average across 1,310 innings, and exactly two starts.
He saved 15 games for the Milwaukee club that won the 1957 World Series in his rookie season and 15 more to lead the National League in 1959. He was still effective at forty-three, with a 1.48 earned run average in 22 games for San Francisco in 1973.
He coached for the Dodgers afterward. In July 1987, throwing batting practice at Dodger Stadium at fifty-seven, he had a heart attack on the mound and died that afternoon. The 1980 ballot gave him one vote of 385.
