In June 1979, at thirty-four and no longer a regular, he came off the Philadelphia bench and hit a home run in three straight pinch-hit appearances. He hit six home runs in 141 at bats that season, which is a rate nobody had gotten out of him in the fifteen years before.

The year after he doubled home the tying run in the deciding game of the League Championship Series and doubled home another tying run in the ninth inning of the fifth game of the World Series, and Philadelphia won its first championship in ninety-seven years of trying.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,344 hits, 179 doubles, 87 home runs and a .258 average, with 1,407 games in the outfield for five clubs. He was Washington's regular center fielder at twenty-three and led the American League in triples in 1969. The 1988 ballot gave him no votes of 427.
