Dean Chance Marquee

b. June 1, 1941 · Los Angeles Angels 1961–1964, California Angels 1965–1966, Minnesota Twins 1967–1969, Cleveland Indians 1970, New York Mets 1970, Detroit Tigers 1971

In 1964 he went 20-9 with a 1.65 earned run average and 11 shutouts for an Angels club in its fourth season, and won the Cy Young Award — then given to one pitcher in all of baseball — with 17 of the 20 votes. He was twenty-three. Eleven shutouts is a figure only a handful of pitchers have reached since the war.

Eleven seasons gave him 128 wins against 115, a 2.92 earned run average, 2,147 innings and 33 shutouts. He won 20 games again for Minnesota in 1967 and threw a no-hitter that August, and a five-inning rain-shortened one earlier the same month.

His arm went at twenty-eight and he was finished at thirty. He went home to Wooster, Ohio, ran carnival games on the county fair circuit and later presided over a boxing association. No Hall of Fame ballot has ever listed him. He died in 2015, at seventy-four.
