He hit .100 in 2013 for a Boston club that won the World Series anyway, then signed with the Cubs for what he announced would be his last season and hit a home run in his final major-league game — Game 7 of the 2016 World Series, which Chicago won to end a 108-year drought.
Fifteen seasons gave him 521 hits, 116 doubles, 106 home runs and a .229 average across 805 games behind the plate for seven clubs. He was never a starter, but pitchers trusted him enough that clubs kept signing him into his late thirties purely to catch and mentor.
The Cubs hired him to manage in 2020, five years after his career ended, making him one of the few players to go directly from a playing career into a major-league managing job with the same club he had just retired from. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot as a player.
