Born December 9, 1941
Brunswick, MO, USA
In October 1973 he appeared in every game of the World Series between Oakland and the Mets — seven games, six and a third innings, no earned runs, two saves — and no pitcher has done it before or since.
Sixteen seasons gave him 143 saves, 66 wins and a 3.12 earned run average across 1,092 innings and 765 games. He saved 27 for Washington in 1970 with a 2.04 earned run average and had a 1.37 for Oakland in 1972, and he was an All-Star in 1969 for a club that lost 96 games.
He was a left-hander with a screwball who never started a game after 1966. He coached pitchers in the Phillies' organization for thirty years afterward. The 1986 ballot gave him no votes at all.
