He signed with Los Angeles out of Hanyang University in January 1994 and pitched in the major leagues that April, the first Korean to do it. His 124 wins are the most by any Asian-born pitcher, one ahead of Hideo Nomo and nine ahead of Yu Darvish.

Seventeen seasons gave him 124 wins against 98, a 4.36 earned run average, 1,993 innings and 1,715 strikeouts, with an All-Star selection in 2001, when he went 15-11 with a 3.50 for the Dodgers. Texas then signed him for five years and $65 million and got 22 wins for it, mostly because of a back injury.

He was enormously followed at home: his starts were broadcast live in the middle of the Korean night through the late 1990s and are generally credited with the growth of the game there. He pitched a final season in Japan and one in Korea. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
