New York Mutuals
The Mutuals were founded as a club of the Mutual Hook and Ladder fire company and were run for years as an arm of Tammany Hall, William Tweed's machine, which paid the players with city jobs. Five National Association seasons at 151-122 without a pennant.
The club was a founding member of the National League in 1876 and was expelled after that first season, along with Philadelphia, for the same offense: it declined to make its last western road trip because the receipts would not cover the travel.
One Hall of Famer played here, Candy Cummings, credited with inventing the curveball. Home was the Union Grounds in Brooklyn, the first ballpark anywhere to be enclosed and charge admission. The National Association's seasons are not counted as major-league by Major League Baseball, so they sit outside the totals on this site.
