Yusmeiro Petit retired 46 batters in a row across several appearances in 2014, breaking a record that had stood since 1972. He had also come within one strike of a perfect game for San Francisco the previous September, losing it on a two-out single in the ninth.
He was a long reliever, which is the least glamorous job on a pitching staff and one he did better than almost anyone of his time: six scoreless innings in relief in the 2014 division series, and a World Series ring that autumn. Oakland used him for four more seasons.
Born in Maracaibo, Venezuela in 1984, Petit appeared in 515 games across fifteen seasons, struck out 767 batters and finished 50-44.
