Whit Wyatt Marquee

b. September 27, 1907 · Detroit Tigers 1929–1933, Chicago White Sox 1933–1936, Cleveland Indians 1937, Brooklyn Dodgers 1939–1944, Philadelphia Phillies 1945

He went 26-43 in nine seasons with Detroit, the White Sox and Cleveland, was sent to the minor leagues, and rebuilt himself in Milwaukee. Brooklyn bought him at thirty-one. In 1941 he went 22-10 with a 2.34 earned run average and seven shutouts, led the National League in wins and shutouts, and the Dodgers won their first pennant in twenty-one years.

Sixteen seasons gave him 106 wins against 95 with a 3.79 earned run average, 1,761 innings and 97 complete games, and four All-Star selections, all of them after he turned thirty-two. He beat the Yankees in the second game of the 1941 World Series, the only game Brooklyn won.

He was from Georgia, threw at hitters and said so, and coached and scouted for decades afterward. The 1958 ballot gave him one vote of 266. He died in 1999, at ninety-one.
