He hit 40 home runs with 109 runs batted in in 1955 and 36 more in 1956, when Cincinnati hit 221 as a club and tied the record the 1947 Giants had set. Four Reds hit 28 or more that year and he was one of them, in a lineup that could not pitch.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,064 hits, 210 home runs, 699 runs batted in and a .266 average. He struck out a great deal for the period and threw well enough from right field to lead the league in assists twice.

He was from Ohio, signed as a pitcher, and was moved to the outfield after two years. He was never chosen for an All-Star team. No Hall of Fame ballot listed him. He died of cancer in 1982, at fifty-two.
