Tony Gwynn

Tony Gwynn Marquee Hall of Fame 2007

b. May 9, 1960 · San Diego Padres 1982–2001

He led the National League in hits seven times, in 1984, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1994, 1995 and 1997. Only Ty Cobb has led more often. The last of those came at thirty-seven: 220 hits, 49 doubles and 119 runs batted in, every one of them a career high, in his sixteenth season.

The 1994 season ended in a players' strike in August, with him at .394 and 165 hits in 110 games. No one has finished a season of 400 or more at-bats higher since Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941. In 1995 he struck out fifteen times in 535 at-bats.

He played all twenty seasons for San Diego, 2,144 games of them in right field, won five Gold Gloves and was chosen for fifteen All-Star teams. On August 6, 1999 he singled four times in Montreal for his 3,000th hit, and Wade Boggs reached 3,000 the next night, the only time two players have crossed within a day of each other. He died on June 16, 2014, at fifty-four.
