Wade Boggs's 3,000th Hit

No one had ever homered for a 3,000th hit until Wade Boggs did it on August 7, 1999. He had three hits and four runs driven in that night, the third of them the home run that mattered, though Tampa Bay lost to Cleveland 15–10.

Boggs was forty-one and finishing his career in his home state with the Devil Rays, having spent eleven years in Boston and five with the Yankees. He had won five batting titles at Fenway Park, drawn 1,412 walks, and reached base more reliably than almost anyone of his era.

Tony Gwynn had reached 3,000 the previous night in Montreal. Boggs retired at the end of that season with 3,010 hits and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2005.
