Rickey Henderson's 3,000th Hit

Rickey Henderson batted once on October 7, 2001, the last day of the season, and doubled. It was his 3,000th hit, and he scored a run in a game San Diego lost 14–5.

Henderson was forty-two and on his fourth club in six years, still leading off. He had already claimed records that look untouchable: 1,406 stolen bases, 2,295 runs scored and 2,190 walks, each of them the most of anyone who has played, and 81 leadoff home runs.

The same afternoon marked Tony Gwynn's final game, two years after Gwynn had reached 3,000 himself. Henderson played two more seasons, retiring in 2003, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2009 in his first year on the ballot.
