Tony Gwynn's 3,000th Hit

Four singles in five at-bats, in Montreal, on August 6, 1999. The first of Tony Gwynn's four hits that night was his 3,000th, and San Diego won a loose game 12–10.

Gwynn was thirty-nine and had played all twenty of his seasons for the Padres, a right fielder who won eight National League batting titles and hit .338 for his career. He had come closer than anyone in a generation to a .400 season, finishing at .394 in the strike-shortened summer of 1994.

The timing was strange: Wade Boggs reached 3,000 the following night, making it the only time two players have crossed the line within twenty-four hours of each other. Gwynn played two more seasons, stopped at 3,141 hits, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2007.
