Tommie Agee Marquee

In the third game of the 1969 World Series he led off with a home run, then ran down a drive in left center in the fourth inning with two men on and another in the right center gap in the seventh with the bases loaded. Five runs were on those two catches. The Mets won 5-0 and the Series in five.

He had been Rookie of the Year in 1966 for the White Sox — 172 hits, 22 home runs, 44 stolen bases, 16 of the 20 votes and a Gold Glove — and then hit .217 in his first year with New York after being traded. The 1969 season was his answer: 26 home runs, 76 runs batted in, sixth in the Most Valuable Player voting for a club that won 100 games.

Twelve seasons gave him 999 hits, one short of a round number, with 130 home runs, 167 stolen bases and a .255 average. He ran a bar near Shea Stadium after he retired. He died of a heart attack in Manhattan in 2001, at fifty-eight. The 1979 ballot gave him no votes of 432.
