He led the National League in stolen bases in each of his first four full seasons, from 1981 through 1984, with a high of 90 in 1983, the year he also scored more runs than anyone else in the league. Only four players in this archive have stolen more bases than he did.
After the 1986 season the owners agreed among themselves not to sign one another's free agents, and Raines, one of them, sat out the first month of 1987 before re-signing with Montreal. He batted .330 in the 139 games left to him that year, with 50 steals and 123 runs, and was the All-Star Game's Most Valuable Player.
He played for six clubs and finished with 2,605 hits, 1,571 runs, 1,330 walks and a .294 average. The writers gave him 132 votes of 543 the first time he was eligible, in 2008, and 380 of 442 in 2017, the tenth and last year his name could appear on their ballot.
