Steve Bedrosian Marquee

b. December 6, 1957 · Atlanta Braves 1981–1985, 1993–1995, Philadelphia Phillies 1986–1989, San Francisco Giants 1989–1990, Minnesota Twins 1991

He saved 40 games with a 2.83 earned run average in 1987 for a Philadelphia club that finished fourth, and won the Cy Young Award with 57 points to Rick Sutcliffe's 55 and Rick Reuschel's 54. It is the closest that vote has ever been at the top, and it went to a relief pitcher on a losing club, which tells you what the save had come to mean by then.

Fourteen seasons gave him 184 saves and a 3.38 earned run average across 1,191 innings. Atlanta had tried him as a starter in 1985 — 37 starts, no complete games — and moved him back. He saved 20 or more in four seasons.

He pitched for the 1991 Minnesota club that won the World Series and finished with San Francisco. His son Cam pitched in the major leagues. The 2001 ballot gave him one vote of 515.
