Skeeter Webb Marquee

Skeeter Webb was Detroit's shortstop for the 1945 World Series, which he reached partly on merit and partly because the war had taken most of the alternatives — he was thirty-five, hit .199 that season, and started all seven games as the Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs.

He also happened to be the son-in-law of Detroit's manager, Steve O'Neill, which the Detroit press noted at some length. The career ran seventeen calendar years across five clubs, almost all of it as a reserve.

Born in Meridian, Mississippi in 1909, Webb batted .219 with 498 hits across 699 games. Webb died in July 1986, at seventy-six.
