He gave up 1,421 hits in 1,866 innings, which is 6.85 per nine — behind only Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax among pitchers with that many innings. Hitters could not see the ball out of his hand: he threw from a low three-quarters angle with the ball hidden behind a large body, and the rising fastball looked like nothing until it arrived.
Fifteen seasons gave him 114 wins against 96, a 3.36 earned run average and 1,743 strikeouts, with two All-Star selections. Ten were with the Mets, and in the seventh game of the 1986 World Series he came out of the bullpen with Boston leading and struck out four in two and a third scoreless innings, which turned that game.
He was from Honolulu, wore number 50 for the state, and is the most accomplished pitcher Hawaii has produced. The 2003 ballot gave him two votes of 496.
