The Gold Glove was invented in 1957 and he won the first three of them behind the plate in the American League. He was chosen for seven All-Star teams across the 1950s, a decade in which Yogi Berra had the position more or less to himself, which is the measure of how good the fielding was.

Eighteen seasons gave him 1,415 hits, 155 home runs, 808 runs batted in, 671 walks and a .264 average. Twelve of them were with the White Sox, and he caught the 1959 club that won the pennant, the first Chicago pennant in forty years.

He came up with Cleveland in 1946, was traded to the Yankees, and was traded away again before they started winning; the Browns had him for three years in between. He managed in the minor leagues and ran a bowling alley in Missouri afterward. Three committees have looked at him and no writers' ballot ever did. He died in 1977, at fifty-three.
