Twenty-three seasons gave him 2,716 hits, 292 home runs, 1,466 runs batted in, 1,255 walks and a .279 average across 2,951 games. He debuted at nineteen with the Houston Colt .45s in 1963 and played his last game at forty-one. Six All-Star selections.

Montreal took him in the 1968 expansion draft and he became the first player the city cared about, the red hair earning him the name Le Grand Orange. He hit 30 home runs in the club's second season and his number is one of the few the Expos retired.

He drove in 121 runs as a designated hitter for Detroit in 1978 and won the award for the position that year, playing 162 games without taking the field once. After he retired he ran a fund for the families of New York police and firefighters killed on duty, which paid out heavily after 2001. He died in 2018, at seventy-three.
