Rube Marquard

Rube Marquard Marquee Hall of Fame 1971

b. October 9, 1886 · New York Giants 1908–1915, Brooklyn Robins 1915–1920, Cincinnati Reds 1921, Boston Braves 1922–1925

He won 201 games against 177 losses over eighteen seasons, with a 3.08 earned run average, 197 complete games, 30 shutouts and 1,593 strikeouts. He led the National League in strikeouts in 1911, with 237, and in wins in 1912, with 26. His three best years, 1911 through 1913, produced records of 24-7, 26-11 and 23-10 for the Giants.

He won nine games in his first three seasons, and the newspapers turned the sum New York had paid for him into a running insult. The fourth year he went 24-7. On April 15, 1915, by then a Brooklyn pitcher, he threw a no-hitter. He worked the vaudeville stage between seasons.

He pitched for five pennant winners: the Giants in 1911, 1912 and 1913, and Brooklyn in 1916 and 1920. All five lost the World Series. The writers voted on him from 1936 to 1955 and never got him past 35 votes of 251. The Veterans Committee elected him in 1971, when he was eighty-four, and he lived another nine years.
