Connie Mack put him in the 1914 Athletics rotation at nineteen and he went 10-4 with a 1.77 earned run average for a club that won the pennant. The next year he went 4-17 and something in the arm was gone. He won eleven more games in the six years after that.
Cincinnati made him an outfielder. He hit .347 in 1924, .348 in 1925 and .318 in 1929, and finished with a .301 average across nineteen seasons — 1,170 hits, 164 doubles, 87 triples and 449 walks, with 840 games in the outfield and 107 on the mound.
He was one of the very few men to have a real career at both, and he played on the Cincinnati club that won the 1919 World Series from the White Sox. He was still a useful hitter at thirty-seven. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1966, at seventy-two.
