Ron Northey Marquee

b. April 26, 1920 · Philadelphia Phillies 1942, 1946–1947, 1957, Philadelphia Blue Jays 1943–1944, St. Louis Cardinals 1947–1949, Chicago Cubs 1950, 1952, Cincinnati Reds 1950, Chicago White Sox 1955–1957

He hit 22 home runs and drove in 104 runs in 1944 for a Philadelphia club that finished last, which was the best season of his career and one of the better ones anyone had for that franchise in the decade.

He hit three pinch-hit grand slams, which tied a record when he did it and has been passed only twice since. Twelve seasons gave him 874 hits, 172 doubles, 108 home runs, 513 runs batted in and a .276 average across 820 games in the outfield.

He had one of the strongest throwing arms of his time and threw out runners from right field into his thirties. He managed in the minor leagues, coached and scouted after. He died in 1971, at fifty, ten days before his fifty-first birthday. The 1964 ballot gave him one vote of 201.
