He hit 35 home runs with 100 runs batted in for the 1983 White Sox and was Rookie of the Year with 104 points of 140. He also struck out 150 times, more than anyone else in the American League, which was the deal: he hit the ball out of the park or he missed it entirely.

Some of them went onto the left-field roof at Comiskey Park, a place almost nobody reached. He hit 32 more home runs in 1984 and 26 in 1985 and was never again a regular after that; the back he had hurt as a minor leaguer, working in a steel mill between seasons, would not hold up.

Ten seasons gave him 648 hits, 176 home runs, 460 runs batted in and a .239 average — a home run every fifteen at bats and 744 strikeouts. He came back to Chicago twice. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
