Across the five seasons from 1921 through 1925 he came to bat 2,679 times and collected 1,078 hits, a .402 average for the whole stretch. He was awarded the Triple Crown in 1922 and again in 1925. His .424 in 1924 is the highest single-season figure anyone has posted since 1900 except Nap Lajoie's .426 in 1901.

He managed the Cardinals to the franchise's first World Series title in 1926 and was traded to the Giants that winter. Four more moves followed: Boston, Chicago, back to St. Louis, then the Browns. Clubs that had no better hitter available kept deciding they could do without him anyway.

He finished with 2,930 hits, 301 home runs and 1,584 runs batted in over twenty-three seasons, leading the National League in runs five times and in hits, doubles and runs batted in four times each. The next-best career average by a right-handed hitter in this archive is Ed Delahanty's .346. Hornsby entered the Hall of Fame in 1942.
