He walked 45 men in 51 innings in 2020 and had an earned run average of 6.62. The following season, having shortened his stride and simplified the delivery, he went 13-7 with a 2.84 earned run average and 248 strikeouts, led the league in both, and won the Cy Young Award with 29 of the 30 first-place votes.
Twelve seasons have given him 88 wins against 81, a 3.94 earned run average, 1,441 innings and 1,734 strikeouts. He struck out 218 men in 2017 for Arizona and made two All-Star teams.
Seattle signed him for five years after the award and traded him after elbow reconstruction cost him most of two seasons. He is still pitching, for San Francisco.
