On June 23, 1971 at Cincinnati he no-hit the Reds and hit two home runs himself, which nobody else has done in the same game. He was 17-14 that season with a 2.88 earned run average, and that winter Philadelphia traded him to St. Louis for Steve Carlton in a swap of two men in contract disputes with their clubs.
Eighteen seasons gave him 188 wins against 181, a 3.69 earned run average, 3,127 innings, 138 complete games and 30 shutouts, with two All-Star selections. He hit 15 home runs, which for a pitcher of that era is a great many.
He won 19 games for Boston in 1975 and was the pitcher of record when Carlton Fisk's home run ended the sixth game of that World Series, having come in for the twelfth inning. The 1988 ballot gave him no votes at all.
