Pat Kelly Marquee

b. July 30, 1944 · Minnesota Twins 1967–1968, Kansas City Royals 1969–1970, Chicago White Sox 1971–1976, Baltimore Orioles 1977–1980, Cleveland Indians 1981

He was a switch-hitting outfielder for fifteen seasons, an All-Star for the White Sox in 1973, and a Baltimore regular in his thirties. He stole 250 bases, drew 588 walks and hit .264, with 1,147 hits across 1,385 games for five clubs.

He became a born-again Christian in 1975 and led chapel services in the clubhouse for the rest of his career. He once told Earl Weaver he hoped his manager would walk with the Lord; Weaver told him he would rather he walked with the bases loaded. Both men repeated the exchange for thirty years.

He was ordained after he retired and preached in Baltimore for two decades. His brother Leroy is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He died of a heart attack in 2005, at sixty-one. No baseball Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him.
