He hit .234 across a fifteen-year career and stayed a regular anyway, because in the dead-ball era a shortstop who could field decided far more games than one who could hit. He played 1,678 games at the position, almost his entire career, for five clubs across three cities.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,365 hits, 232 doubles, 719 runs batted in, 328 stolen bases and 616 walks — a career built on getting on base by walking and staying there by fielding rather than by hitting the ball hard. He was Connie Mack's shortstop for the Athletics' first six seasons, 1902 to 1907.

He umpired in the minor leagues after retiring. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1934, at sixty-four.
