Born July 21, 1935
Ozanna, Lwów, Poland
In the first game of the 1966 World Series he came in for the third inning with Baltimore leading and struck out eleven Dodgers over six and two-thirds innings, which is still the record for a relief pitcher in a World Series game. Los Angeles did not score again in the Series; the Orioles swept it.
He was the game's most committed practical joker: he called opposing bullpens on the phone in a false voice and had pitchers warming up for no reason, put goldfish in water coolers, and set off smoke bombs. Every account of the 1966 and 1970 Orioles includes him.
Seventeen seasons gave him 88 wins against 105, 55 saves and a 3.71 earned run average across 1,641 innings. He was born in Poland and came to the United States at three. He died of multiple myeloma in 2006, at seventy.
