On April 15, 1983 he retired twenty-six Chicago White Sox in a row and then Jerry Hairston singled with two out in the ninth. He finished with a one-hitter. The next season he went 17-8 for the Detroit club that started 35-5 and won the World Series, and he won a game in the Championship Series.
Sixteen seasons gave him 119 wins against 113, a 4.07 earned run average, 2,016 innings and 73 complete games. He pitched in the 1970 World Series for Cincinnati at twenty, in his first season.
A torn rotator cuff ended it at thirty-six. He was never an All-Star and no Hall of Fame ballot has listed him.
