He was the Cubs' left fielder at twenty-two and finished third in the 1983 Rookie of the Year voting, then went to Cleveland in the trade that brought Rick Sutcliffe to Chicago for the 1984 pennant race. Cleveland had him for five years and the Yankees for four more.

Thirteen seasons gave him 1,171 hits, 229 doubles, 134 home runs, 620 runs batted in and a .276 average. His best year was 1992 in New York — 163 hits, 15 home runs, 81 runs batted in — and he was out of the major leagues at thirty-two, playing in Japan and then in Mexico.

In 2009 a Texas jury convicted him of sexually assaulting a girl he had coached, and he was sentenced to forty-five years in prison. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
