He was a second baseman who could not hit for average and got on base anyway: 875 walks against a .259 average, and 89 of them in 1998 alone. Texas had him for five years and three division winners in the 1990s, and Seattle had him for four more.

The 2001 Mariners won 116 games and he was their left fielder and second baseman, hitting .286 with 39 stolen bases at thirty-six. He played 404 games in the outfield across his career and 1,197 at second base, and he played all four infield positions after turning thirty.

Nineteen seasons gave him 1,602 hits, 255 doubles, 943 runs and 272 stolen bases for seven clubs. He was released by California at twenty-six with a bad hamstring and had to rebuild the whole career after that. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
