Luke Sewell Marquee

He caught for twenty seasons, mostly for Cleveland, and was chosen for one All-Star team in 1937. Twenty seasons gave him 1,393 hits, 272 doubles, 653 runs batted in and a .259 average across 1,562 games behind the plate.
He managed the Browns from 1941 through 1946 and took the wartime 1944 club — with talent depleted across the league by the draft — to 89 wins and the only pennant the Browns ever won, losing the World Series to the Cardinals, who shared their ballpark. He later managed Cincinnati as well, finishing his managerial career at 606-644.
His brother Joe is in the Hall of Fame, and their careers overlapped for parts of a decade. Five writers' ballots and a committee have taken up Luke's name. He died in 1987, at eighty-six.
