Lou Finney spent nine years with the Philadelphia Athletics as Connie Mack's great teams were being dismantled around him, then went to Boston in 1939 and had the best hitting of his career there, batting .320 in 1940 and making the All-Star team.

He was a first baseman who could play the outfield and often had to, and his usefulness kept him employed through the war years with the Red Sox and the St. Louis Browns. A final season with the Phillies in 1947 lasted eight games.

Born in Buffalo, Alabama in 1910, Finney collected 1,329 hits and batted .287 over 1,270 games. He died on April 22, 1966, at fifty-five.
