Pittsburgh put him in center field alongside his older brother Paul in 1927, and they stayed there together for fourteen seasons. He had 223 hits and 133 runs that first year, the runs leading the National League, and the Pirates took the pennant. The brothers finished with 5,611 hits between them.

Contact was the whole of his game. In 7,772 at-bats he struck out 173 times, and among players who came up in 1913 or later with that many at-bats, only Joe Sewell struck out fewer. He batted .316 with 2,459 hits and 1,201 runs, led the league in triples with 20 in 1929 and in hits with 214 in 1931, and played 1,660 games in center field.

The veterans committee elected him in 1967, and the choice has been argued over since. He hit 27 home runs and drew 420 walks in eighteen seasons, and his case rests almost entirely on the average and the hits. He was picked for one All-Star team, in 1938.
