He went 8-20 as a starter for Minnesota, was designated for assignment five times before he was twenty-nine, and reinvented himself in Oakland: a 1.80 earned run average and 124 strikeouts in 85 innings in 2019, then 38 saves for the White Sox in 2021 to lead the American League.
In January 2023 he announced he had non-Hodgkin lymphoma, went through chemotherapy, and pitched in a major-league game on May 29 to a standing ovation. He was Comeback Player of the Year that season and had elbow reconstruction the following one.
Fourteen seasons have given him 116 saves and a 3.88 earned run average, with three All-Star selections. He is Australian, from Perth, and one of the most accomplished players that country has sent to the major leagues.
