Kenny Rogers Marquee

b. November 10, 1964 · Texas Rangers 1989–1995, 2000–2002, 2004–2005, New York Yankees 1996–1997, Oakland Athletics 1998–1999, New York Mets 1999, Minnesota Twins 2003, Detroit Tigers 2006–2008

On July 28, 1994 he retired all twenty-seven California batters he faced, the first perfect game by a left-hander in the American League. He won 219 games against 156 across twenty seasons with a 4.27 earned run average, and won five Gold Gloves, which for a pitcher is a considerable number.

Texas took him in the 39th round in 1982 as an outfielder who had not pitched in high school. He was converted in the minors, spent four years in the bullpen, and did not start a game in the major leagues until he was twenty-eight.

He was forty-one in 2006 when Detroit reached the World Series and he pitched twenty-three scoreless innings that postseason, with an argument in the second game about a dark substance on his pitching hand that the umpires told him to wash off. The writers gave him one vote of 571 in 2014.
