He hit .341 in 1991 for Texas, the best average in the American League, at thirty-two. Twenty-three seasons gave him 2,586 hits, 1,194 runs batted in, 407 doubles, 281 stolen bases and a .298 average, with five Silver Sluggers and three All-Star selections.

He left the major leagues twice, played in Japan, Korea and Mexico between spells, and came back both times. He was a Met at forty-eight in 2007, and he is the oldest man ever to hit a major-league home run, which he did at forty-six and again at forty-seven.

He held his bat pointed at the sky, wrapped so far behind his head that hitting coaches assumed it could not work, and got 2,586 hits with it. He was Dominican, signed at eighteen, and has managed and coached since. No Hall of Fame ballot has ever listed him.
