Castro stayed in the majors for seventeen consecutive seasons through his ability to cover the infield. His largest offensive year came with Cincinnati in 2003, when he played 113 games and set career highs with 81 hits and nine home runs while driving in 33.

He finished with 601 hits, 123 doubles, 36 home runs, 234 runs batted in and a .229 average across 1,103 games. Castro played 571 games at shortstop, 264 at third base and 252 at second, with seven more at first.

The Dodgers brought him up in 1995, and he moved to Cincinnati in 2000. Later stops included Minnesota, Baltimore and Philadelphia, along with returns to the Reds and Dodgers. Castro played for two organizations in his final two seasons, ending with seven games for Los Angeles in 2011.
